Infertility is perceived as a problem across virtually all cultures and
societies and affects an estimated 10%-15% of couples of reproductive
age. In recent years, the number of couples seeking treatment for
infertility has dramatically increased due to factors such as
postponement of childbearing in women, development of newer and more
successful techniques for infertility treatment, and increasing awareness of available services.
Treatment For Infertility :
IVF treatment
may be used to overcome female infertility in the woman due to problems
of the fallopian tube, making fertilisation in vivo difficult. It may
also assist in male infertility, where there is a defect in sperm
quality, and in such cases intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) may
be used, where a sperm cell is injected directly into the egg cell. This
is used when sperm have difficulty penetrating the egg, and in these
cases the partner’s or a donor’s sperm may be used. ICSI is also used
when sperm numbers are very low. When indicated, the use of ICSI has
been found to increase the success rates of IVF.
In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) or Test-tube baby
is a process in which eggs are taken out from woman’s ovaries and then
fertilized with sperms in a fluid medium in the laboratory. The
fertilization procedure depends on semen parameters like sperm count,
motility, morphology etc. Eggs are placed with motile sperm overnight in
conventional IVF.
IVF Treatment Procedure :
IVF is often the treatment of choice for couples in who are
experiencing male factor infertility, particularly with
intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), a procedure in which one sperm
is injected directly into the egg.
There are some steps in IVF process which include the following:
-
Monitor and stimulate the development of healthy egg(s) in the ovaries.
-
Collect the eggs.
-
Secure the sperm.
-
Combine the eggs and sperm together in the laboratory and provide the appropriate environment for fertilization and early embryo growth.
IVF lab personnel often search for hours just to find a
dozen sperm for injection Pregnancy rates of 35% to 60% have been
achieved depending on patient age and sperm quality from the testis or
epididymis.
IVF Success Rates :
The success rate of IVF clinic
depends on a number of factors including patient characteristics and
treatment approaches. It is also important to understand that pregnancy rates are not the same as live birth rates. The live birth rate for
each IVF cycle started is approximately:
30 to 35% for women under age 35
25% for women ages 35 to 37
15 to 20% for women ages 38 to 40
6 to 10% for women ages over 40
IVF success rates are the percentage of all IVF procedures
which result in a favorable outcome. Depending on the type of
calculation used, this outcome may represent the number of confirmed
pregnancies, called the pregnancy rate or number of live births, called
the live birth rate.
Due to advancement in reproductive technology, the IVF
success rates are substantially better today than they were just a few
years ago. The most current data available in the United States a 2009
summary complied by the Society for Reproductive Medicine which reports
the average national IVF success rates per age group using non-donor
eggs.
