Hysteroscopy Procedure In Chennai

A procedure in which the doctor has to look inside the uterus so as to diagnose and treat the causes of abnormal bleeding is called hysteroscopy. Hysteroscopy is performed using a hysteroscope. It is a thin, lighted tube which is inserted into the vagina so as to examine the cervix and inside of the uterus.

What are the benefits of hysteroscopy?

Hysteroscopy has the following advantages:
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Shorter recovery time
  • Less pain medication needed after surgery
  • Possible avoidance of "open" abdominal surgery

How is hysteroscopy performed?

Prior to the procedure, the doctor will prescribe a sedative to help relax.
Then the patient will be administered with anaesthesia. The procedure will take place in the following order:
  • The doctor will dilate the cervix to allow the hysteroscope to be inserted.
  • The hysteroscope is inserted through the vagina and cervix into the uterus.
  • A liquid solution like water or a gas like carbon dioxide is then inserted into the uterus, through the hysteroscope, to expand it and to clear away any blood or mucus.
  • With the help of light shone through the hysteroscope the doctor will examine the uterus and the openings of the fallopian tubes.
  • If at all any kind of surgery needs to be performed, then small instruments are inserted into the uterus through the hysteroscope.
The entire procedure can be done with in a time frame from less than 5 minutes to more than an hour.

What to expect after the procedure?

After the procedure, the patient may have some cramping or slight vaginal bleeding for one to two days. Also may feel shoulder pain if gas was used during the procedure. However, if any of the following symptoms are experienced, contact the doctor:

  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Heavy vaginal bleeding or discharge
