PCOS- The Causes

The actual cause of PCOS is unknown. In certain conditions, the body produces more insulin and this extra insulin triggers the ovaries to produce more male hormones. Certain genes are also linked to PCOS. The PCOS can pave the path for diseases such as Infertility, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, liver disease, abnormal uterine bleeding, high blood pressure, obesity etc.

Diagnosis of PCOS

Most probably doctors diagnose the disease with the help of three main factors:
  • High androgen levels
  • Irregular menstrual cycle
  • Cysts in the ovaries
Besides asking questions related to acne problems, excess hair growth, and weight gain, the doctor suggests for a pelvic exam, blood test, and ultrasound.

PCOS Treatment

The doctor may recommend a low-calorie food along with excessive physical activities. Medication includes medicines that contain estrogen and progestin decrease androgen production and hence correct abnormal bleeding and excess hair production. Progestin therapy is also used.

Surgery: Surgery can be used as a method to improve fertility where other treatments do not work. Ovarian drilling of tiny holes in ovary using a laser or thin needle to restore normal ovulation is the main surgical process during PCOS surgery. Other surgical procedure includes oophorectomy, hysterectomy and cyst aspiration.

  2. Medicines to Help You Ovulate

You won’t be able to get pregnant while you’re taking birth control pills for PCOS. But if you need help ovulating so that you can become pregnant, certain medicines may help:

Clomiphene is an anti-estrogen drug that you take at the beginning of your cycle.
If clomiphene doesn’t help with ovulation, you may be prescribed the diabetes drug metformin.
If clomiphene and metformin don’t work, your doctor may prescribe a medication containing a follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and a luteinizing hormone (LH). You get this medicine in a shot.
One other drug that helps with ovulation is letrozole. It’s sometimes used when other medications aren’t effective.
